신명진 회장, ‘태평양도서국가 코리아센터’ 설립 추진 위해 피지공화국 방문
신명진 회장은 8월26일 외교부 지원 협회 신사업인 ‘태평양도서국가 코리아센터 설립 프로젝트’ 추진을 위해 태평양도서국가 연합사무국(Pacific Islands Forum, PIF)이 소재한 피지공화국을 방문, 주요 인사들을 만나 사업현안을 논의했다.
현재 협회 신규사업으로 추진중인 이번 프로젝트는 태평양도서국가(남태평양 소재 14개 국가)에 대한 무역진흥 및 활성화를 위해 ‘태평양도서국가 코리아센터(가칭)’를 한국에 설립하고, 한국 정부 차원의 외교 및 통상지원 정책을 협회가 외교부 예산 지원을 받아 주도적으로 주관하는 사업이다.
협회는 이를 위해 지난 3월부터 외교부와 함께 대상국가 정부와 사업추진을 지속적으로 협의했으며, 사업에 대한 본격적인 실행을 위해 태평양도서국가 연합사무국을 방문해 현지의 대표기관과 협력방안을 논의했다.
본 사업은 협회의 신사업 확대 계기를 마련했을 뿐만 아니라 민간외교 역할 및 경제단체로서의 기능 제고의 초석이 될 것으로 기대된다.
Chairman Myoung-jin Shin visited Fiji for Establishment of the ‘Pacific Islands Center in Korea’
On Aug. 28, KOIMA Chairman Myoung-jin Shin visited Fiji, the HQ of Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), to discuss issues on the commencement of the ‘Pacific Islands Center in Korea Project’, the new project of KOIMA supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The ‘Pacific Islands Center in Korea Project’ is one of the association’s new projects, that involves the establishment of the ‘Pacific Islands Center in Korea (provisional)’ for promotion and activation of trade with the Pacific Islands (14 countries in the South Pacific region) with diplomatic and trade support policy managed by the KOIMA, with financial support by Korea's MOFA.
For the project, KOIMA, with the valued support of MOFA, held regular discussions with the governments of the Pacific Islands since last March, and visited the headquarters of the PIF to discuss cooperation with the representative organizations of the region for the commencement of the project.
The project not only established a basis for expansion of KOIMA’s new projects, but also promoted KOIMA’s role as a non-governmental diplomatic and economic organization.
